1. Imagine you’re starting from scratch

This is the first and most important step. If you’re going to get to the bottom of what you really want out of your addition – think clean slate! When adding on to your home it’s easy to start to automatically think of what connects where and how it will look etc. Unfortunately, falling into that mindset can prevent you from designing an efficient and beautiful space.

Thinking just about this one room and how it would be in its ideal isolated fashion can also help you later on when you do need to think about how it will join up with your house. Knowing how you want this one section to be will give you insight on what else will need to be done to make your ideas a reality.

2. What will this room be used for

Rather than thinking exactly where everything will go and what you will need to purchase – figure out the exact reason you want this room and what will go in it. It’s one thing to say you need extra space – it’s another to know why! Why do you want this room? What things won’t fit in your house? Is this a bedroom or storage space? An entertaining space or a work space?

Figure out what you will be using the space for so you can make the room more purpose built for your home. Once you have a concrete idea in mind it will be easier to know how you want the room to function and therefore be built. Think in particular about what furniture will need to fit and with what measurements, and also consider any shelving or closets that you will want to use.

3. How will you tie it to your house

Only after you have considered what your ideal room would look like and what it will be used for  can you consider how to tie it into the rest of your house. Adding onto your home, unlike a new construction, will inevitably require thinking about how it will attach to your house, tie in with the rest of architecture, and be accommodated for by the utilities. Your architect and contractor will be able to help you with making these decisions if you need extra ideas and or help.

You can also start to consider what color schemes and fixtures you will need to make the addition fit in with the rest of the house. Make sure that the addition flows seamlessly from room to room, and if you want to this is  a great opportunity to change wall colors or complete remodeling tasks in other areas of the house as well.
